Friday is May 1, May Day. That’s International Workers Day, and also the day that a coalition (including Indivisible National) is calling for us to flex our economic power by making it a day of No Work, No School, No Shopping. (Check out MaydayStrong.org.) Not everyone can do all of that, but do what you can: if you can skip work, great, if not, at least don’t buy anything. If you really need something, buy local, not from big corporations. We need to practice for a more significant stoppage that we’ll need if—when—the GOP messes with the midterms.
Then, join the Workers Over Billionaires march, May 1 at 4:30pm, in Holyoke.
And of course, let’s continue to pressure corporations that align with the current regime. We want them to defect to our team! Locally, we’ve joined the campaign against Citizens Bank, which funds two corporations that build and run ICE’s detention centers—you know, those concentration camps where ICE “detains” people indefinitely in terrible conditions, where more than 30 people have died and 100 are on a hunger strike. Other banks have withdrawn their support, and we need to persuade Citizens Bank to do likewise. So join our standouts on Fridays outside the Citizens Bank on King St. (it’s inside the Stop & Shop,) and if you have a Citizens Bank account, move your money to a bank that’s not morally bankrupt!
Hungary, of course, just kicked out its autocrat, despite his control of the press and other parts of their society. (So we can do it too!) Apparently the message that won was about corruption. And—gosh, do we have any of that going on here? Funny how the Trump kids made huge investments in drone companies just before their dad started the Iran war, and just as the Pentagon tripled its budget for drones. So the longer the war continues, the richer the Trump family gets. Let’s talk this up! Letters to editors, social media—not everyone is connecting the dots, so let’s help them do that.
